EDUCATION IN THE ARTS: HELLGATE ELEMENTARY

Education in the Arts: Hellgate Elementary
at the Missoula International Airport
Partnership formed to showcase Excellence in Education
MISSOULA, MT. (June 1, 2011) Airport Director Cris Jensen announced today a collaboration between Missoula International Airport and Hellgate Elementary, their neighboring school district. Throughout the coming year, Hellgate Elementary students will have an everyday presence in the Missoula International Airport. Jensen stated “We’re extremely pleased to be able to showcase the tremendous student talent and the commitment to excellence in education that Hellgate Elementary provides.”
“The presence”, according to Airport Marketing Manager Leslie Wustrack, will be “a display of artwork in a variety of forms – art, science, math, and culture. The first display will be Hellgate Elementary’s 8th grade mask-making.” Forty-one students, out of a field of 150, were chosen to display their masks for the inaugural presentation. Wustrack added “We’ll unveil the installation tonight with an Open House Celebration.” The Airport has invited all forty-one students, their families, Hellgate Elementary’s staff and Board of Trustees, and the Airport’s Board of Commissioners, to the Celebration on Wednesday, June 1, from 5pm-7pm.
"We’re honored to partner with the Missoula International Airport to promote the ‘Education in the Arts’ program which encourages young artists to produce and proudly display their individual works of creative expression through art" stated Douglas Reisig, Ed.D., Superintendent.
The Airport is the largest open public space in the region. Wustrack said “We’re thrilled to be able to work with Dr. Reisig and his staff. A huge thank you goes out to Morrison-Maierle, Inc., consulting engineering firm, for sponsoring the display.” The public is invited to view the display. The masks are located pre-security in the Airport Terminal West Lobby.
The mission of Hellgate Elementary is to provide an educational learning environment that supports and sustains academic achievement, academic excellence, and life-long learning for all students. This learning environment is child-centered in its focus and is supported by a caring and involved community. Superintendent Dr. Doug Reisig was awarded the prestigious G.V. Erickson Award for Education in 2010.
Currently four airlines, Alaska/Horizon, Allegiant, Delta, and United, have operations at Missoula International Airport. Nonstop flights are offered to ten destinations: Alaska Air recently added a direct flight from Missoula to Portland, Oregon. For more information, visit www.flymissoula.com.
