Missoula Internatonal Airport Control Tower Project
December 23, 2009 - The Missoula County Airport Authority, with FAA approval and financial assistance, and based on a finding of no significant impact from the Environmental Assessment, hopes to begin construction of a new air trafic control tower (ATCT) as early as Spring, 2010. Missoula's current tower, built in the 1960's, is showing its age. Outdated technology, insufficient height, and ongoing maintenance are just a few of the issues that have prompted the replacement of the 61-foot tower with a brand new 140-foot (proposed) tower.
The design of the proposed ATCT will be based upon the FAA's standard eight-sided tower design. It consists of a cab, capable of housing four to five air traffic controller work positions, and a functional shaft. The control cab, which has a glass panel exterior to allow vision of the airport runways and taxiways, would contain communications and surveillance equipment used by air traffic controllers to monitor traffic at Missoula International Airport.
This will be an exciting new project, and we invite you to check this page often as we continue to add new information as it becomes available.
