Missoula Airports Facts and Trivia
Did you know that a Jumbo Jet (Boeing 747) can carry more than 400 passengers, and the new Airbus A380 can be configured to carry over 850 passengers.
Missoula International Airport has two runways. Runway 11-29 is almost two miles long and 150 feet wide. It would take almost 45 minutes to walk the entire length of the runway.
An aircraft can't drive in reverse. It has to be pushed back away from the terminal by a tug. Do you think that's why you've never seen an aircraft with a rear vision mirror?
If you stood on tip toes in the engine of a Jumbo Jet and stretched as tall as you can, you would not be able to touch the top.
After passengers check-in their luggage, it goes along a conveyor belt. Computer readers scan the bar code on the luggage tags and automatically direct the luggage to go on the correct aircraft.
There are always more aircraft flying in the sky than there are planes on the ground at airports.
The Missoula airport is like a small town. We have pilots, air traffic controllers, plane refuellers, aircraft caterers and others directly involved with the aircraft, we also have shop keepers, gardeners, firefighters, and Police Officers.
The trucks used to fuel airliners can pump over 150 gallons of fuel per minute. It only takes about 10 minutes to fuel our planes at Missoula.
Did you know that the first airplane flight was only 120 feet long? That's almost the same length as some of the airplanes that take off and land at Missoula International Airport every day!
